ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE____________________________________

Welcome to the Lackawanna Trail School District’s webpage. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and share my enthusiasm about joining the Lackawanna Trail community. My name is Tania Skotleski and I am the Assistant Principal of Lackawanna Trail Junior-Senior High School. I am delighted to become a member of a school district that prides itself on scholarship, innovation, high expectations and teamwork.

The school board, administration, faculty and staff are committed to ensuring that Lackawanna Trail Junior-Senior High School is a safe, orderly environment that is conducive to learning. In order for each student to achieve personal success, we have established high expectations for behavior. By creating a positive school climate, all students can pursue their life’s goals.

Education is a partnership between the school and home. As such, we encourage regular communication. The district strives to maintain contact with families through a variety of channels such as the telephone, e-mail, meetings, a comprehensive website, informative mailings and special programs. To enhance this collaborative effort, I ask that parents and students familiarize themselves with the Student Handbook, Curriculum Guides, Student Dress Policy and Online Grade Book, as well as other information and policies of the Lackawanna Trail School District.

I look forward to the wonderful experiences that I expect the 2008-2009 school year to bring. If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

ATTENDANCE______________________________

It is mandatory, under the Pennsylvania Compulsory Attendance Law, that students attend school regularly. The administration of Lackawanna Trail is committed to complying with these regulations.

Students at Lackawanna Trail may be excused from school for illness, visits to health professionals, court attendance, a death in the family, religious holidays, impassable roads or a family emergency. College visitation and family educational trips may also be excused, but need to be approved by the administration at least 3 days in advance. If the visit/trip is approved, then the student will be responsible to request missed academic assignments during his/her absence.

Following each absence a written excuse signed by the parent, guardian, physician, or other legal entity must be submitted to the attendance secretary within 3 school days of the absence(s) in order to be legally documented. Each written excuse must contain the first and last name of the student, date(s) of absence and the reason for absence(s). Failure to turn in an excuse or failure to turn in an excuse meeting the above criteria will result in an unexcused absence.

EARLY DISMISSAL FROM SCHOOL________________
In order to minimize disruptions to the school day, appointments should be conducted after school hours. If a circumstance arises where a student is not able to obtain an appointment outside of school hours, the following procedure should be followed.

Students wishing to be dismissed from school early must present a note, signed by a parent/guardian, to the main office on their way into school. This note must include the student’s name and grade, parent’s/guardian’s name, time and reason for the early dismissal, and a telephone number where a parent/guardian may be contacted. Students returning to school after their appointment must bring documentation confirming their appointment. Documentation must include the student’s name, date and duration of the appointment, authorized signature from the physician’s office and contact number.

COMPUTER AND INTERNET USAGE_______________

Lackawanna Trail Junior/Senior High School provides computer use and Internet access for all students. The use of computers, the school network, and the Internet is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in disciplinary action by school officials and/or the cancellation of those privileges. Students should use these resources to conduct research that is consistent with the objectives of the Lackawanna Trail School District. Since students are responsible for all activities that take place through the use of their school account, it is strongly recommended that students do not share their logon information or passwords. Please consult the Student Handbook for acceptable and unacceptable use of computers, the school’s network and the Internet.

LOCKER USAGE________________________________________________

Each student is assigned a locker for his/her use only. Sharing lockers or combinations is prohibited. Students are responsible for all materials in their lockers. If students have trouble with their locker they are to report this to the high school office. No student purchased locks are permitted. The student must assume the responsibility for all school issued materials. All lockers remain the property of Lackawanna Trail High School and the school reserves the right to search lockers as determined to be necessary to maintain the health and safety of the student body and to prevent the use of the lockers for unauthorized or illegal purposes; therefore, the school maintains the legal right to inspect any locker when there is an indication of misuse. No items may be placed on the outside of the lockers. Gym lockers are to be used during gym class only.

SCHOOL DRESS POLICY_________________________________________

All articles of student dress must be appropriately sized to the student and worn properly. Clothing must not be excessively loose or tight. Students may not add to, nor subtract from, the approved student dress policy. Also, student clothing must be maintained in good condition, without holes, rips or tears, or additions. Please review the Student Dress Policy for requirements regarding specific clothing items.

STUDENT DISCIPLINE____________________________________________

Students required to serve detention must abide by specific guidelines as described in the Student Handbook.

During detention, students may complete work, read approved materials and study quietly. Students who are unprepared to complete an approved assignment during detention will be issued a written assignment.

Any student who is involved in extracurricular activities will not be allowed to play, practice or participate in events during the hours that they are scheduled for Saturday Detention or suspension.

Failure to comply with these expectations or detention rules will result in the following:

• Failure to complete an assignment during Level I detention or failure to attend a Level I detention will result in a Level II detention.
• Failure to complete an assignment during a Level II detention or failure to attend a Level II detention will result in an out-of-school suspension for 1-3 days.
• Other misbehaviors during a Level I or Level II detention may result in a student being dismissed from the detention; thus being suspended.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH & POWER OF THE PAWS___________________

The Student of the Month and Power of the Paws programs were developed to recognize students who are role models for their peers. Students who receive either of these distinctions do so for their academic effort, positive attitude, contributions to the school community as well as other criteria.

“GOOD GUY” PROGRAM__________________________________
Each year in April, the Lackawanna Trail Administration hosts the annual Good Guys’ Breakfast. The purpose of this program is to recognize students who are good school citizens. These students are polite and respectful, work to the best of their ability, do what is asked of them, and volunteer to do more. In general, they make coming to school everyday worthwhile. Good guys are nominated by administrators, faculty and staff.
